Matter Exploration

We have been doing lots of experiments with matter, which have helped us understand the various states more fully. We are also seeing how matter behaves and transforms, which is one of our lines of inquiry.

We explored liquids by examining how they behave in different containers:

And also by seeing what liquids do if they are mixed.

We observed that not all liquids mix, and oil did not mix with any of the liquids we tested. We then explored what solids do when mixed with liquids. We noticed that some solids stay the same, while some dissolve. Coffee grounds and sugar dissolve, while gravel and wooden cubes do not. We also saw that some solids, such as baking powder, cause a reaction!! Ask your child what happened when the vinegar was mixed with the baking soda.
