New Unit of Inquiry: Organization can help a community thrive!

We have begun our new Unit of Inquiry on organization within communities. Please see the letter sent home today with vocabulary words to discuss at home, and also take a moment to click on the page titled "Units of Inquiry" just below our header picture on this blog for more information about the central idea and lines of inquiry.

We started our unit by examining the word 'organization'. We reflected on how we keep things organized in our own lives; see the pictures in the slideshow below for the ideas we came up with:

We Are Creative!

We were involved in a lot of fun activities during our unit on creativity. One of these was an activity in which we read the book "Not A Box" by Antoinette Portis. (You can listen to the book here). We then used our creativity to design and create things out of ordinary boxes. Our ideas included such things as a dog, a claw machine and a clock. You can see all our creations through these pictures:

We also had a number of guest speakers come in to share with us how they use their creativity through various forms of expression. Mrs. Birdwell shared her creativity through dance, Mr. DenHartigh through art, Mr. Russell through drama, Mr. Swapan through music and finally Mr. Morris through design technology. We were inspired by their creativity and tried expressing ourselves in various ways too!

We will be beginning a new Unit of Inquiry this week. The central idea is, "Organization can help a community thrive." We look forward to exploring this unit in detail throughout the next few weeks!

Fun & Games Day Shirts

We are so excited for Fun and Games Day tomorrow! Today we spent time making our own sort of tie dye on our shirts. They turned out great! Carla's artwork of the whale on the front looks beautiful and we are excited to make our debut as the KG-M Splashing Whales. We kept our shirts at school so that they won't accidentally be left at home, and all children will change into them tomorrow morning. They cost 400 taka each, and if you can send that in sometime within the next week it would be appreciated. Please make sure your child comes with a water bottle tomorrow and a hat if sunny.
Once again, if you would like to come watch your child participate in tomorrow's festivities, you can meet us on the big field at 12:40.

Note: If you would like to do this activity at home, all you need are colorful Sharpies (or other permanent markers), and rubbing alcohol. Make the shirt taut over a cup or other open surface with the help of a rubberband, draw a small design, and drip drops of rubbing alcohol over the design with a pipette. Watch as the colors spread!

Ringing in 2015

A belated Happy New Year to all of you. I am sorry our blog has not been updated in several weeks as I have been away. Thank you for all your warm condolences; my trip home was a rushed one and it is good to be back with the children and in the swing of things.

KG-M has been busy these past two weeks and has had such wonderful experiences in which to partake. Several guest speakers came to share with us how they use their creativity in various ways. Please expect to see videos and pictures of these after we hear from one of our final guests today!

Next week is spirit week at AISD and the elementary school is invited to participate. It is a fun experience for all students and we do hope you will encourage your child to get in the spirit. Listed below is the schedule for the week.

Sunday: PJ Day
Monday: Crazy Hair Day
Tuesday: Dress up as Favorite Book Character Day
Wednesday: Opposite Day
Thursday: Tiger Day (**also Fun & Games Day)

Kindergarten through Grade 2 will participate in Fun & Games Day next Thursday, January 22 from 12:40 to 2:30. During this time the children will participate in a variety of outdoor games and races. It is a day that is looked forward to every year and I am certain we will have a great time. This year we have decided to all ourselves the "KG-M Splashing Whales" and t-shirts are being made for us to wear for the event. I will let you know soon how much these will cost. Our design is being printed on white so that we can tie-dye the shirts before the event -- another much-loved activity. Please know that you are invited to attend Fun & Games Day and watch your child run, jump and skip! Simply meet us out on the big field at the appropriate time.
