A Busy Time in KG-M!

We have been busy in KG-M continuing our work as scientists, authors, readers and mathematicians. See some of our work below:

We recently studied the work of Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky and his use of geometric shapes.

We discussed the attributes of the various shapes and their similarities and differences. After thorough examination of several pieces of his work we created our own paintings:

We have also been closely examining 3D, or solid, shapes. We've looked at the various attributes of the shapes and then used clay and toothpicks to create our own:

Last week we were very fortunate to have Linda Sue Park visit us at AISD. It was exciting meeting a published author and we learned a lot about becoming better writers ourselves. We even made her personal blog! You can see her reflections on AISD's ES assembly here.

Our current Unit of Inquiry on matter and materials has challenged us and encouraged us to predict and explore. We've learned that everything around us is made of matter and that all matter does two things:

1. Takes up space
2. Weighs something (has mass)

Our experiments have been filled with opportunities for us to learn about and understand matter. Ask your child about some of the experiments shown below:

Heat can cause matter to change from one state to another!

Where did the water on the outside of this glass come from? Ask your child about condensation!

Does ALL matter weigh something? What about air? Ask to see what we found out.

How do different materials react when put in water?

We are constantly making predictions and testing hypotheses as scientists.

We also have had a wonderful time celebrating birthdays in KG-M. We've already had three in March so far! Happy sixth birthday to Adoo, Lily and Syeda!

System Presentations

Apologies for not getting these uploaded sooner. Please view the final presentations created by the students to showcase the various systems they explored throughout our last Unit of Inquiry. Four groups decided to make iMovies and one group made a poster.  **Some of the videos do not have the best sound quality, so be prepared!

We Are Scientists!

Last week we began a new Unit of Inquiry and visited the science lab to experiment with items in different states. We compared, contrasted, sorted, and mixed. This gave us lots to think about and made us wonder.

We discussed the various reactions we observed when mixing the items placed on the table and noticed that we used our five senses a lot while experimenting. We then went up to the lab again today and did a couple experiments involving baking soda and vinegar. This made us wonder even more and we added a lot of questions to our "Wonder Wall".

Watch the amazing reaction we observed during our experiment!:

Author Celebration

We celebrated being authors of pattern books today! The students were excited to share their work and displayed confidence through their presentations. We are very grateful to all the parents that came. It was a wonderful morning. Please view the video below. We used it to present our learning and explain the process we went through to write our books.
