A Great Beginning

Our first day of kindergarten was filled with fun. We read the folktale The Gingerbread Man, decorated cookies, and after spending Art class with our tummies grumbling and mouths watering with the thought of eating them, we returned to the classroom to discover they had run away just like in the story! Of course we immediately went on a hunt to track them down, which provided a nice opportunity to tour the places we will be visiting on a regular basis throughout the year. Many teachers and students assisted in directing us down the right path until we finally found them hiding in Mrs. Kitto-Switzer's fifth grade classroom! We realized they must have run there to meet our reading buddies. After capturing them we sat down and enjoyed our snack.

We spent time on our first day discussing what we can do to ensure we establish a calm, fun, safe and productive classroom. We practiced many of the daily routines and procedures and by the second day had already mastered many of them! Very few reminders were needed today, demonstrating what a great group of listeners we have on our 'team'. This idea of teamwork was extended as we created our "essential agreements" today and created a mural of our class. We agreed to such things as being safe, listening to and respecting others, trying our best, and using helpful -- not hurtful -- words.

After pledging to follow our agreements, Nora put these agreements into practice by sharing her ideas. She thought we should take a picture of our team in the shape of a heart. After realizing this was somewhat difficult we concluded a circle may be better.

We look forward to a year full of fun and learning and can't wait to share our adventures with you!

Welcome to KG-M!

Dear Kindergarteners and Parents,

Welcome to Kindergarten! This will be an exciting year filled with inquiry, discovery, laughter and fun. We will study many interesting Units of Inquiry, focusing on the five senses, imagination, plants, systems, materials and personal histories.

Let me begin by introducing myself. My name is Kacey Molloy and this is my third year at AISD. Prior to moving to Dhaka I taught kindergarten in Montana and then served in the United States Peace Corps in Macedonia with my husband Conor. We welcomed our first child to our family at the end of May and have so enjoyed our time as parents thus far. Your children all met my son Caelan this afternoon, so you may have already heard about him.

I would also like to introduce another important person. Her name is Husna Din and she is our teaching assistant. She is a valuable part of our classroom and your children's education. I'm sure you will see her often, both in the school and in your children's stories.

This blog has been created as a resource for information on school/classroom events and as a way to stay updated on our learning environment. Please feel free to contact me throughout the year with any questions or concerns by emailing me at kmolloy@aisdhaka.org. I would also be more than happy to set up a meeting with you during non-learning hours. I am looking forward to seeing all parents at Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, August 28. Enjoy meeting the single subject/specialist teachers at 7:00 p.m. in the community hall and I will meet you in our classroom at 7:30. I love kindergarten and the incredible growth that seems to happen overnight. I can't wait to see what this year has in store!

Regards,
Kacey Molloy
