We Are Scientists!

KG-M is full of scientists and we have been expanding our understanding of matter by doing lots of experiments in class. Our central idea for this Unit of Inquiry is, "Exploring and classifying diverse matter can help people become knowledgeable about the materials in our world." By understanding how matter behaves and changes we can be more knowledgeable about why and how different materials are used around us. Here are some of the experiments we have done:

Can matter change states? Can it change from a solid to a liquid and then to a gas? Many children thought that initially the ice was melting because the lights in the room were shining on it. We did an experiment to see if this was true by placing it inside a completely dark closet for 10 minutes and saw that the lights were not needed to make it melt (although they may have played a role in how quickly it did so). We explored this concept further and learned that yes, matter can change states. Heat helps it do so!

We then examined what happens when we try to do the same with coffee. We saw that not all of the mixture evaporated; some of it (the original solid part -- coffee) just burnt!

After examining how heat can turn a solid to a liquid and then to a gas, we wondered if solids could change directly into gases. We observed as paper was lit on fire and smoke was created. The solid (paper) transformed color, shape and texture. The smoke was a combination of solids and gases.

Another experiment involved finding different liquids throughout the school. We made predictions about which if any would freeze. We saw that all of them expect the hand sanitizer froze in the school freezer. We then predicted what would happen if we put all the solids on a tray and let them sit for an afternoon. This is what happened:

We were interested to see what would happen to an M&M if left in water for a while. We saw that the color dissolved (a new word for us) and the 'm' on top of the candy fell off. The longer the M&M sat, the more it dissolved until it was all white, then all brown as only the chocolate portion was left.

Now it was time to experiment a little with gas. We knew we could trap gas inside a balloon, but we decided to see if we could trap gas another way. We realized that we could do so by blowing bubbles! We gathered some wire and made our own rings to use in this experiment.

We did another experiment with gas and explored reactions between materials. We first predicted and then observed the reaction between water and baking soda. Next we hypothesized what would happen if we mixed vinegar and baking soda. We were surprised to see that it foamed! We completed this experiment by seeing what would happen if we put some baking soda in an empty balloon, put the balloon over the opening of a bottle filled with vinegar, and then dumped in the baking soda. We observed as the balloon filled up with gas! We realized this happened because baking soda and vinegar react to make a gas (carbon dioxide). The gas was trying to 'escape' but was trapped by the balloon.

We compared solids and liquids with Ms. Marie (Nora's mom) during learning centers and saw that a collection of very small solids and liquids behave the same in many ways. In exploring these hands-on we can identify what makes them different, however.

Saturday Sports

Please see the note below about Saturday Sports:

Hello parents and students,

Saturday Sports (basketball) sign up is this Saturday, March 29th from 9 to 11 am in gym A.  While there are some HS student coaches, parents are also needed and encouraged to join in to help out.
The age groups/times are:
K-1st graders: 8:15-9:00
2nd-3rd graders: 9:00-10:00
4th -5th graders: 10:00-11:00
Future tigers will learn how to dribble, pass, shoot, and the basics of the game.
The cost for the basketball season is 2000 taka, and the first day is 19th April.

Thank you!

Upcoming Performing Arts Events

Please see the informative note from Mrs. Betty Chang, Performing Arts teacher, below:

Dear KG Parents,

We have a number of performances coming up in May for our KG performers!

The first two performances are usual performances for our KG students:  the K-2 Performing Arts Revue and the Senior Transition Day:
  • On 28 May, in the afternoon, KG students will have a Performing Arts Revue with first and second graders.  They will be singing two songs:  Celebrate, Celebrate and the Hello Song.  In addition, each class will be performing an item of their choice for the concert.
  • On 29 May, in the morning, KG students will be helping the school send off our Seniors during their Senior Walk through/ Transition Day.  This year, our KG students will be speaking an excerpt from 'Oh the Places You'll Go' by Dr. Seuss.  Each student has been assigned a line that they will need to practice and memorize for the Senior Walk Through/ Transition Day.
Our newest commitment, and perhaps, the biggest and most exciting is that we have been invited to be a part of the Wizard of IB!    The three KG classes will combine to perform at the beginning of the Wizard of IB as minions (from the movie Despicable Me).  The performance dates for the Wizard of IB are 22-24 May with Thursday and Friday performances at 6 pm and a Saturday performance at 1 pm.  Further details will be sent out at a later date.

Thank you for your support of the arts.

Sincerely,

Betty Chang

Sales

Thursday, March 20 there will be two sales at school. Class 3M is putting on a bake sale and 'craft world' to raise money for several organizations (CARE, ABC School, Heifer International, DFID, Pennies for Peace and Opportunity International) to help the poor. Class 2B is also hosting a 'Reusable Sale' for their Unit of Inquiry on sustainable environments. If you would like your child to purchase anything, please send money with him to school. We will be attending the sales at 10:00.

Visiting Poets, SAISA and Matter

REMINDER: NO SCHOOL SUNDAY

We had a very busy week at AISD. Two special visitors were present at the school all week leading workshops on poetry. Poets Sara Holbrook and Michael Salinger were selected as this year's guest authors and we were fortunate to attend a short assembly with them both, as well as a special kindergarten session with just Mr. Salinger. He taught us how to write our own refrain poems, which we are excited to try! They fit in perfectly with our current writing unit on pattern books.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday AISD hosted this year's SAISA boys basketball tournament. Unfortunately our own Tigers lost in the championship game by just one point, but it was an exciting game to watch. I hope you had the opportunity to enjoy it!

Because teams travel far to attend the tournament, they do not have many fans present. Therefore, elementary classes 'adopt' teams to support. KG-M adopted the TAISM Eagles from Muscat, Oman. We participated in the opening ceremonies and then went to support the Eagles as they played. We were excited when they came to visit our classroom as well, and they even brought us a t-shirt to hang in our class which was signed by all the players.

We also were excited to continue our new Unit of Inquiry on matter this past week. We have been experimenting with solids, liquids and gases and spent one morning looking closely at just liquids. We observed as scientists and noticed some exciting things, such as how the same amount of liquid in one container can look very different in another. We will continue to explore and experiment to learn now different states of matter behave differently.

Systems Presentations

We just finished our Unit of Inquiry on systems. Each child worked with a team to study a school system in depth and then shared their findings with the class. The groups were shown examples of various ways to present information, such as through posters, slideshows, books and videos. Once one group began making a movie, the other groups were interested in doing the same. Therefore, all four groups created their own iMovies. They interviewed the different people involved in their systems and then worked together on iPads to put their video clips together. These movies were created with very little teacher input; students were of course taught how to do the various steps in the iMovie app, but they were then in charge of independently doing the work. It was quite impressive to see how quickly they picked it up!

The students demonstrated their growing understanding of teamwork and how important it is for everyone to do their job; they shared what would happen if one person did not do his job. This Unit encouraged the children to think at a higher level.

Please enjoy the movies below!
