Can you remember what you see?

During our study on the brain we learned that a part of the brain called the hippocampus helps us remember things and helps us turn short-term memories into long-term ones. We did an activity in which we used our sense of sight to identify objects on a tray, and when our sight was taken away 10 seconds later we used our hippocampus to recall what we had seen. We discovered that this activity was harder than we had originally thought!

Our discussion continued as we began to understand that we can only experience color through our sense of sight. We did an experiment called the "Exploding Rainbow" and watched colors come alive! We also practiced being scientists as we predicted and observed.

*If you'd like to do this experiment at home, you simply need to pour whole milk into a shallow dish, add a few drops of different colored food coloring in a few places, and then drizzle dish soap around the milk. Watch as the colors begin to swirl!
