Thursday, March 20 there will be two sales at school. Class 3M is putting on a bake sale and 'craft world' to raise money for several organizations (CARE, ABC School, Heifer International, DFID, Pennies for Peace and Opportunity International) to help the poor. Class 2B is also hosting a 'Reusable Sale' for their Unit of Inquiry on sustainable environments. If you would like your child to purchase anything, please send money with him to school. Visiting Poets, SAISA and Matter
REMINDER: NO SCHOOL SUNDAY
We had a very busy week at AISD. Two special visitors were present at the school all week leading workshops on poetry. Poets Sara Holbrook and Michael Salinger were selected as this year's guest authors and we were fortunate to attend a short assembly with them both, as well as a special kindergarten session with just Mr. Salinger. He taught us how to write our own refrain poems, which we are excited to try! They fit in perfectly with our current writing unit on pattern books.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday AISD hosted this year's SAISA boys basketball tournament. Unfortunately our own Tigers lost in the championship game by just one point, but it was an exciting game to watch. I hope you had the opportunity to enjoy it!
Because teams travel far to attend the tournament, they do not have many fans present. Therefore, elementary classes 'adopt' teams to support. KG-M adopted the TAISM Eagles from Muscat, Oman. We participated in the opening ceremonies and then went to support the Eagles as they played. We were excited when they came to visit our classroom as well, and they even brought us a t-shirt to hang in our class which was signed by all the players.
We also were excited to continue our new Unit of Inquiry on matter this past week. We have been experimenting with solids, liquids and gases and spent one morning looking closely at just liquids. We observed as scientists and noticed some exciting things, such as how the same amount of liquid in one container can look very different in another. We will continue to explore and experiment to learn now different states of matter behave differently.

Systems Presentations
We just finished our Unit of Inquiry on systems. Each child worked with a team to study a school system in depth and then shared their findings with the class. The groups were shown examples of various ways to present information, such as through posters, slideshows, books and videos. Once one group began making a movie, the other groups were interested in doing the same. Therefore, all four groups created their own iMovies. They interviewed the different people involved in their systems and then worked together on iPads to put their video clips together. These movies were created with very little teacher input; students were of course taught how to do the various steps in the iMovie app, but they were then in charge of independently doing the work. It was quite impressive to see how quickly they picked it up!
The students demonstrated their growing understanding of teamwork and how important it is for everyone to do their job; they shared what would happen if one person did not do his job. This Unit encouraged the children to think at a higher level.
Please enjoy the movies below!
